“Try to reason with that idiot.” Theli grabbed the second lamp from the wall and strode toward the animals with her mace. “I’ll keep these things back.”

Aldari didn’t think she would be able to reason with any of the mercenaries unless Hawk survived, and he told them all that she hadn’t been responsible, but maybe Pheleran would listen to her hypothesis.

“I didn’t poison Hawk,” she called through the door as Theli advanced into the tunnel, waving the lamp and her mace to scare the animals. They shifted and growled at her, but they didn’t retreat. “But I may know who did. Your medic gave him a suspicious green liquid. He wasn’t sick before that, but after he drank it, he went downhill very quickly. Tell your lieutenant to talk to Mevleth about poison. Have someone check his medical kit and take a look at that stuff. Maybe it’s not what he says it is.”

Growls emanated from what had to be dozens of throats. As more and more animals gathered, they grew braver.

One darted forward, coming into the light as it ran toward Theli. It looked like a giant weasel with a possum’s squinty half-blind eyes, and it opened a brown furry snout to reveal pointed fangs. The thing’s head was level with Theli’s thigh, if not her waist.

“Some raccoon,” Theli said as she swung her mace at it.

The slinky-bodied animal darted backward, avoiding the blow, but it didn’t retreat all the way into the shadows. More identical creatures were creeping forward. If they charged all at once…

Aldari banged on the door. “Pheleran, do you hear me? How well do you know that medic? How long has he been with the company? Do you trust him?”

She didn’t get an answer and had a feeling Pheleran had left. They were on their own.

Another animal rushed Theli, and she kicked it in the jaw. It scurried back but not far.

More of the pack were creeping in, pressuring the others to continue forward, to attack. Two animals darted at Theli. She kicked one and smacked another with her mace. Bone cracked as she connected with its skull. That one dropped to the ground, squealing and rolling, but the other one dodged the kick and lunged in, biting for her leg.

As Theli jumped back, she kicked out again. It shifted aim and snapped down on her boot. Theli yowled and swung the mace at its head, the light level faltering as her lamp wobbled wildly.

“Be careful with the lamps,” Aldari warned, giving up on getting help from the outside. They’d really be in trouble if they had to fight these animals in the dark.

Theli’s only response was a snarl. Aldari ran in to help, swinging the baton at a creature lunging for Theli’s side.

The artifact was a meager weapon compared to a mace, but the animal was focused on Theli and didn’t see the blow until it struck. The baton slammed into the side of its head. The attack didn’t knock it to the ground
